- Selected by competitive examination at age 16 (scoring in upper 99th percentile) for course leading to B.S. in Naval Science and Tactics (engineering specialty), from the University of Texas at Austin. This five-year program was the equivalent of the course at the US Naval Academy at Annapolis designed to qualify the candidate for both command at sea and engineering duty. He finished in under two years, and was commissioned Ensign, (DE), USNR, at age 18. He scored in upper 99th percentile in Standard Officer Qualifications Exams, after graduation.
- BSME, with honors. with multiple majors in Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and Industrial Management from the University of Texas at Austin -- member of Ramshorn (honorary Engineering Society, equivalent of liberal arts student's Phi Beta Kappa)
- Post graduate studies in Operations Research, Organization, Administration and Finance for Non-Financial Executives at the University of California at Berkeley
- Graduate of 2 year postgraduate course in Emergency Management of the National Economy (Econ.) majoring in Emergency Management of the National Economy at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) -- Scored in the upper 95th percentile of all Military and Naval Officers graduates.
